HAGAR QIM, is made up of a main temple and another three megalithic temples beside it. The main temple is said to have been built between 3600 and 3200 BC, although the northern ruins are relatively older.
Hagar Qim shares its basic architectural design with the other temples, mainly those of Mnajdra, Tarxien and Ggantija.
The northern temple is the oldest part of Hagar Qim, containing an oval chamber with a semi-circular apse on each side.
This temple uniqquely has three insulated layers of flooring. The pavemenmt on the topmost level is not marked by sacrificial fires, unlike the lower floors. Due to the different methods used in polishing the stone, scholars have theorised that the three layers of pavement illustrate three major shifts in construction at Hagar Qim.
Stone balls of different sizes are located alongside the walls of the nrothern temple and other parts of the structure. These are theorized to have been the rollers used to transport the megaliths. Excavations have reveled such rollers buried beneth the megaliths, thus contributing to solid fondations.
